Statistics condenses grouped data into one central value: mean, median or mode. Probability measures how likely an event is, as a number from 0 to 1. Both start from organised data or a sample space, and both ask: what is typical, and what is likely?
- Mean, median and mode are measures of central tendency for grouped data.
- Mean: three methods (direct, assumed mean, step-deviation) all give the same value.
- Median uses cumulative frequency; the median class is the one containing n/2.
- Mode uses the modal class, the class with the highest frequency.
- Empirical relation: 3 Median = Mode + 2 Mean.
- Probability of an event lies between 0 and 1; sum over all outcomes is 1.
- Theoretical probability assumes equally likely outcomes, like a fair coin, die or cards.
Sample questions
A fair coin is tossed once. What is the probability of getting a head?
Show answer
Answer: C. 1/2
There are 2 equally likely outcomes: head and tail. Only 1 is favourable. So probability = 1/2.
A bag contains 5 red and 3 blue balls. One ball is drawn at random. What is the probability that it is red?
Show answer
Answer: B. 5/8
Total balls = 5 + 3 = 8. Favourable red balls = 5. Probability = 5/8.
A bag contains 4 green and 6 yellow marbles. One marble is drawn at random. What is the probability that it is not green?
Show answer
Answer: B. 3/5
Total marbles = 10. Not green means yellow = 6. Probability = 6/10 = 3/5.
A fair six-sided die is thrown once. What is the probability of getting a number less than 1?
Show answer
Answer: A. 0
No number on a die is less than 1, so favourable outcomes = 0. Probability = 0.
One card is drawn at random from a well-shuffled deck of 52 cards. What is the probability that it is the 10 of spades?
Show answer
Answer: C. 1/52
There is exactly one 10 of spades in a deck of 52 cards. Probability = 1/52.
